Lifestyle & Weight Loss Advice

Meet our Healthy Lifestyle Adviser

Introduction

Hello my name is Matthew Fairhurst and my job role is a Healthy Lifestyle Advisor. This role involves supporting Warrington residents to recognise how their lifestyle impacts their health and wellbeing. I provide them with a combination of information, support and opportunity to help them make sustainable changes to their lifestyle related behaviours in order to achieve a positive health outcome. 

Objective of Role

My main objective is to assist in reducing the number of G.P appointments and save surgeries money.

Role Outline

Patients should be invited to a session with myself in the surgery. This is to discuss their lifestyle in relation to their health and agree goals that I would support them to achieve over several 121 sessions and telephone support over the next 12 weeks.

Inclusion criteria

Adult Warrington Resident

B.M.I between 25 and 29

Newly diagnosed pre diabetic (raised HBA1c)

Smoker who may consider becoming smoke free

Lower back Pain (more than 1 episode in last 12 months)

Currently inactive (less than 150 mins per week)

Exclusion criteria

Under 16 Years Age

30+ B.M.I

Existing Diabetic

Ready to quit smoker

Any adult who would fit the existing criteria for livewire’s existing Lifestyle Programme. Please refer these individuals as normal.

 

Outcome measures

An individual’s lifestyle related health makers will be recorded pre and post intervention.

 

Padgate surgery is pleased to announce that we have a new service being piloted in collaboration with 2 neighbouring practices- Fearnhead and Birchwood.

We are offering lifestyle and weight loss advice in conjunction with a lifestyle advisor who will be based at one of the three practices each week. You will be able to access an appointment at any of the three practices.  Please speak to a member of staff for more details.

As well as ensuring the best health services are available when you need them, we want to help you work towards achieving a healthy lifestyle.

A healthy lifestyle can help prevent you from developing long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. You can help yourself to keep in good health by eating healthily, keeping active, drinking sensibly, stopping smoking, and managing your stress levels.

A range of options are available to support people with weight loss.

One suitable option would be to see the lifestyle advisor who will be able to offer advice on healthy eating, weight management and getting physically active.

Many doctors now believe that when it comes to your health, your waist measurement is important.

While knowing your body mass index (BMI) is a good way to decide if you’re overweight, it doesn’t tell the whole story.

BMI is a measure of how healthy your weight is for your height. You can work out what your BMI is by using the NHS Choices BMI healthy weight calculator.

If you have a high BMI, you’re likely to be carrying extra fat. But your health could be at greater risk depending on where you store that fat.

Having a large amount of tummy fat (compared to fat around your bottom or thighs) makes you more likely to develop diabetes and heart problems.

A healthy waist circumference for men is less than 94cm (37 inches), and for women it’s less than 80cm (32 inches).

Losing weight and keeping it off isn’t easy, but it has many benefits. You may only need to make small changes to your lifestyle to maintain a healthy weight.
